The word “unprecedented” has been used to the point of fatigue to describe 2020, a year in which a pandemic stirred up spectres of our frailty and vulnerability in the face of disease. Enough has been said about the tragic loss of life, the pain of suffering and isolation and the struggle to find a way out of uncertainty. Despite our weariness with confronting the dark side of the pandemic and the ravages on lives and livelihoods, it is inevitable that we look for hope amid the gloom.
Perhaps it is an inescapable part of being human, our need to find light in times such as these, to be reminded of hope, indomitable. Not only that, there’s something deep-seated in humanity, a need to commemorate and recognise individuals when they surpass themselves, when they represent the strength, dedication and commitment desired in their communities.
Frontline and essential workers risk their lives every day to fight the pandemic and keep our economy and communities running. COVID-19 has taken our jobs, our livelihoods, and our sense of security and everyone is yearning for a sense of normalcy. We all are still at risk, not all is immune from this pandemic yet. With many countries moving toward endemic, this crisis is not over yet and there would be a continual risk of outbreaks and will need to stay confident of the steps to take with the transition to endemic. We all must work together, especially with all frontline and essential workers that fought bravely for us, which all should be recognised for the past and to encourage to move forward together.
In light of this adversity, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Johor has instituted a commendation medal to recognise and encourage the citizens in this fight against the COVID-19 Pandemic. The title of this medal, Jasa Dikenang which translates “Remembrance of Service”, precedes His Majesty’s gesture of sincere appreciation and gratitude to the frontliners. It also highlights a silver lining amidst trying times. The medals are awarded to outstanding individuals who have stepped forward serving tirelessly bearing great personal risk to themselves and their loved ones.
ROYAL INSIGNIA is honoured to be the appointed medallist and be part of this significant history. Drawing inspiration from the positive resilience of the brave front-liners, we were driven by a commitment to provide an outstanding quality that is befitting of the award.
As every medal is personal to the award recipient, the reverse side of the medal mints a picture of 10 hands holding each other, reminding the recipient of the symbolical unity amongst Johor’s 10 districts.
The thoughtfully designed medal comes with a hand-stitched ribbon, in red, white, and blue stripes representing the colours on the Johor Flag.
